PENKRIDGE 2050

Benefits

As mentioned previously, planning at scale, has a number of advantages. This includes the delivery of infrastructure – such as schools, health facilities, open spaces and better streets. In exploring the potential for growth, the following potential benefits of growth which could be delivered for Penkridge and the wider community have been identified. This is not a final list, and we welcome your thoughts and ideas  and suggestions on other improvements that could benefit Penkridge.

Western Spine Road

The spine road aims to provide access to land west of the railway and create connections between potential development areas. It also offers significant potential for creating an alternative route for vehicles that currently travel through Penkridge and help manage the impacts of traffic, especially when vehicles are diverted off the M6 motorway. The spine road also has the potential to be a structuring focus for the developments it will serve, and therefore could be designed to function as a boulevard-style corridor with footpaths cycles routes, and positively addressed with building frontages.

Improvements to Penkridge Centre

The western spine road offers a vital opportunity to make the most of reduced through traffic on the existing A449 corridor through Penkridge Centre - improved walking and cycling facilities supported with streetscapes improvements with spaces for outdoor activity and a new civic focal point. The intention is for the extent and detailed design of these improvements to be locally led and informed by public involvement. Improved streetscapes also offer the potential to stimulate further investment potential for expanding the range of services in facilities in Penkridge centre that a greater catchment could support.

A new mixed use focus around the railway station

The railway station has the potential to become a focus for a mix use development to complement improvements in Penkridge centre with office space, extended hotel accommodation, and residential development framing a new station square to create improved western access to the station.

A new sports hub

A new sports hub centrally located has the potential to offer existing and new residents a mix of sports pitches and pavilions, adjacent to mixed-use development at the railway station.

Creating a network of accessible green spaces

The full scope of growth has the potential to develop a wide network of green spaces connected with new and improved pedestrian and cycle connections. Creating a network also provides an added benefit in creating recreation opportunities in an area that currently has limited public rights of way. A key centrepiece of these improvements would be a new riverside park. Wider growth also offers the potential in realising wider opportunities to improve the quality of the Staffordshire Way and Cross Britain Way.

A wider choice of schools and community facilities

Growth would be supported with the provision of new primary schools, a second middle school and may be of a scale to support the provision of a new high school. Whilst improvements to the offer of local services is to be focussed in Penkridge Centre, local centres, including modest sized retail units and community facilities could serve their immediate catchments.

The role of the community as future custodians

In playing a part to shape the future of Penkridge the local community and stakeholders also have a vital opportunity to become custodians in taking ownership and management of community assets. This may be in the form of community trusts or transferring ownership to the Parish Council.

The River Penk and new parks along its length could be an example of what could become a future community asset in the form of a new riverside park.
